(LEBANON, Ill., Nov. 19)—The McKendree College hockey team posted its second straight one-goal victory over the University of Kansas with a 5-4 victory Saturday at the U.S. Ice Sports Complex in Fairview Heights.
The Bearcats roared to a 5-1 lead, then held off a late rally from the Jayhawks to win their fourth consecutive game. McKendree is now 10-12-1 overall and will not play again until Dec. 2, when the Bearcats travel to Addison, Ill., for a contest with Robert Morris College.
Against Kansas, sophomore center Scott Roberts (Philadelphia, Pa./Bensalem) (Philadelphia, Pa.) tallied two goals. Freshman wing Nick Dreyer (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) (Waterloo, Ill.), junior wing Brian Neighbors (Belleville, Ill./Althoff Catholic) (Belleville, Ill.) and sophomore wing Kyle Ilges (Highland, Ill./Highland) (Highland, Ill.) each added a goal for the Bearcats, while junior defenseman Brent Grimm (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) (O’Fallon, Ill.) tallied two assists.
McKendree trailed 1-0 when Dreyer scored a power-play goal late in the first period. Neighbors gave the Bearcats a short-lived 2-1 lead early in the second period before the Jayhawks tied the contest with 14 minutes remaining in the period. Roberts broke loose for a pair of goals in an 87-second span, and Ilges posted a short-handed goal with 7:17 remaining in the second to extend the Bearcats’ lead to 5-1.
Kansas cut the deficit to 5-2 after two periods, then scored twice in the third period to pull within 5-4. However, sophomore Matt Brandt (Waterloo, Illinois/) (Waterloo, Ill.) and the Bearcats’ defense was able to hold of the Jayhawks to preserve the win. Brandt registered 29 saves, including 14 in the second period. Brandt has won each of his last two decisions.
